Hello Sam,
Thank you for reaching out to us!
It seems, that you are using a development build of InstaLOD Studio XL, which has not been tested as thoroughly as a release build. The application should not crash, and the STEP export works in InstaLOD Studio XL 2020b.
Nevertheless, InstaLOD does not support the export of CAD files that contain NURBS/BREP data. When you export a STEP file from InstaLOD Studio XL 2020b, it contains tessellated data that cannot be retessellated after reopening the file.
When exporting files from InstaLOD Studio XL, we recommend using proprietary file formats such as FBX or USD.
Thanks,
Andreas

Still wish there was a way to save out a file that has the information cached. It's a pain to go back to the beginning if I want retesselate any data that I have. Another option might be to make it possible to import another file structure and maintain the CAD live link so you can just move the new tessellated files over to the old hierarchy when done. Instead I have to go back through the whole thing reimport it all and go step by step through the process. Seems redundant. There has to be a better way than not having some sort of CAD live data intact.

Hello Sam,
If I understand you correctly, you would like to be able to change the tessellation in a scene after a review that is performed on the tessellated data. Unfortunately, that would require the implementation of a new file format. Perhaps we could help you to refine your workflow instead?
A solution could be to utilize scene rules to automate the import and the scene setup. Scene rules can be recorded when performing actions such as retessellation, grouping, or material assignment. They can be saved in a profile, and on the next import of the file, they can be executed automatically. You can find more information on scene rules in our Knowledge Base: Using scene rules for full automation
Let me know if you require more information on this topic. Thanks,
Andreas

Yeah we use scene rules. the issue is, if I need to go back to tesselate another part, after I lose CAD live link, I cannot just go back. Once the CAD live link is gone, due to either a name change or hierarchy change or running an operation, I have to go back through the process of reimporting a .step file to once again have CAD live link again. This takes, sometimes, forever to reopen and re tesselate. It would be really helpful to have a version you could save that would allow you to keep CAD live link, so you can reopen it and work from there. I have had Instalod Crash several times on me, I have a beefy computer, 128 gigs of RAM, 3090 ti card, and plenty of power. Yet some CAD data we use is pretty heavy, and in the middle of processing can just shut down Instalod. If there was a way to save a version of CAD live link data it would be helpful. I know this is a wishlist item. But something to think about.
