Best settings to remesh low poly?
AnsweredHi, i am using instaLOD for unity and I'd like to remesh a low poly tank with hard edges but I can't figure out which settings to tweak for the best result. Everything I tried destroyed the characteristics of a low poly mesh.
Maybe you can tell me what settings I should tweak. Thanks!

Hello Christian, thank you for reaching out.Unfortunately, it is hard to determine which exact settings to use without seeing the model in its full form.If you can upload a similar model via your InstaLOD Cloud account, we would be able to take a closer look at the issue. Thanks,Calvin

Hello Christian, what issues did you notice when remeshing the model?I noticed that a remesh using default settings generates an almost perfect result with a hand full of backfaces which can be overcome by enabling 'Ignore Backfaces' in the remesh settings.Alternatively, you can reduce the resolution to "Low" which will model over any potential cracks between the parts and therefore make the resulting model watertight, without generating any backfaces. Please let me know if I was able to answer your question. Thanks,Calvin

Hello Christian, the reason that your model looks slightly "washed out" is due to the 1024 resolution texture that you are baking. When using the remesher, InstaLOD bakes down a lot of details to be able to achieve such a radical polygon reduction. Therefore, the final texture resolution determines the available detail. I recommend using a 2048 texture for the tank which worked fine for me:Please let me know if I was able to answer your questions. Thanks,Calvin

Hello Christian,Increasing the resolution could work, however, it should not make much difference when working with such a low poly input mesh.I recommend reducing the "Hardangle Threshold" to a value of around 15 and changing the UV unwrap strategy within the remesher to "Hard Surface Axial" which will increase the final texture rendering quality on the model.Additionally, using a 4k texture is excessive considering you are working on a very low poly model. A 2k texture should be sufficient. For the best results, I recommend remeshing the entire tank instead of the individual parts, as you could otherwise simply use the optimizer instead. This can be done by simply selecting the main node and all of its children at the same time before remeshing. Please let me know if I was able to answer your questions. Thanks,Calvin

Hello Christian,
I am glad to hear that I was able to help you so far.
There is currently no way to clean the InstaLOD Data folder from unused data. This would be a Unity feature request more so than something we could implement on our side.
With that said, with the upcoming update, you will be able to specify the location of where your results will be saved.
Thanks,
Calvin
